Fragrance Facts and FAQ's

1. What is the difference between Perfume, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Cologne?

The difference is a matter of concentration of oils in the fragrance. The highest concentration of oils is in perfume (also called parfum). Next would be Eau de Parfum, then Eau de Toilette, and finally Eau de Cologne. After Shave has the least amount of oils. The higher the concentration of oils, the stronger and long lasting is the fragrance, and the less you need to apply.

2. Why do some fragrances last much longer than others?

People with dry skin usually find their fragrance holding time shorter than those with oily skin because oily skin has more natural moisture to hold in the fragrance. Also, an individual's PH levels determine how each ingredient in a fragrance will react.

3. How can you make perfume last longer?

Fragrance lasts longer on some people than on others because of differences in skin conditions and PH levels. Experts suggest 'fragrance layering'  in order to achieve a lasting effect; starting with fragrant bath/shower gel, then the moisturizer or talc, then the Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum or Eau de Cologne. This will usually make the fragrance last longer. Also, apply fragrance to pulse points, wrists, behind the knees, neck, insides of your elbow, as well as a dab behind your ears. Some experts suggest that a light mist on the hair can last all day.

4. What is the difference between a splash and a spray?

They are basically the same. The only difference is in how they are applied---splashed on or sprayed on.

5. What is the difference between After-Shave and Cologne, why is one preferred over the other?

Colognes generally last  longer than After-Shave. Many men choose to wear both. It is entirely a matter of personal preference

6. Why does fragrance have  alcohol content?

The properties of alcohol makes the fragrance emanate/smell from your skin.

7. What is the difference between After Shave Lotion, After Shave Gel, and After Shave Balm?

After Shave Lotion helps close the pores after shaving. After Shave Balm  soothes the skin. After Shave Gel soothes and cools the skin, as well as relieving razor burn.

8. What is shower gel?

Shower gel is soap in a different form. It foams up well and leaves your  fragrance on the skin. It also enhances your cologne or perfume and makes the fragrance  last much longer.

9. What are fragrance notes ?

Fragrance contains many different scents, which are also  called notes.

  • Top notes: very light and last just a few minutes.
  • Middle notes: take effect in about 15 minutes after application. These can last up to an hour or more.
  • Bottom notes: are the heavier scents. These last the longest, usually for several hours.

10. What is the best way to store perfume?

All fragrances should be kept in a cool, dry area, and away from windows as sunlight can throw some ingredients out of balance. Experts suggest storing an opened bottle in its box, to preserve the fragrance and to  ensure a longer shelf life.

11. What is the shelf life of a fragrance?

The average shelf life of a fragrance is 3 to 5 years; for pure perfumes it is much less.
